Frequently Asked Questions
What is the US Navy method?
The US Navy body fat formula estimates body fat from circumference measurements. For men: 86.01 × log₁₀(waist − neck) − 70.041 × log₁₀(height) + 36.76. It is accurate to within ±3–4%.
Why do women need a hip measurement?
Women naturally carry more fat in the hip area, so the formula for women includes the hip measurement to improve accuracy: 163.205 × log₁₀(waist + hip − neck) − 97.684 × log₁₀(height) − 78.387.
Where should I measure my waist?
Measure your waist at the navel (belly button) for the US Navy method. Do NOT measure at the narrowest point. Stand relaxed and measure after exhaling normally.
