  1. The line quality was different in wans story and the story of the two lovers cave. I like those art styles but I'd rather get like the art style of most of the avatar episodes.

  2. One thing only reference that I use is to get like the base of the body at that point I haven't even gotten my idea yet then I stop looking at the reference and after that everything is out of my mind so what are you talking about

  3. I usually take the advice that many artists give, which is to always use a reference, but, I also painted one picture strictly from my imagination, for a children’s book. And I was told by more than one person, that it was adorable and looked professional. Please don’t put chains on artists by telling them they can’t do this and they can’t do that.

  4. I remember when I was a kid in middle school it was those who did exactly this that became the great artists. I didn't understand what they were doing so I traced my favorite art. Everyone disliked that I did that. But it worked for me kinda. Now im 30 and hopefully ill get into art school. Thank you Ethan for the help with this topic and others. My portfolio is getting better.

  5. I can only draw a circle for a head oval eyes smiling mouth long hair because I have long hair oval body human arms human legs :/

  6. I hate that I had to click on your video in order to give a thumbs down and say I can't stand your dumb clickbait titles. Enjoy your popularity… but please know you are insufferable though.

Oh wait, you aren't going to read this comment. W/E

  7. The "Never Draw From Imagination" advice is a little clickbaity, because it is counterintuitive, very true in one sense, and very false in another sense.
Real Life references are needed in the art that you do, but imagination is necessary to make anything worthwhile.

  8. I'm a grown ass adult. I even have a full time job in animation. But I'm still a stupid baby, a stupid high school baby, and I have so much to learn. THIS GUY MAKES ME WANNA LEARN MORE! I suck!!! I SUCK SO BAD!! HELL YEAH

  9. Saying nothing is original is simply an art teachers way of telling newbies to slow down and learn structure and style ability before tackling stuff you concept from your own ideas, "original" or not.

  10. I love what AJ does with just the default round brush. He’s truly a master at what he does. And it’s just another example of how brushes aren’t the most important thing.

  11. "Don't draw from imagination " I literally teach a class called "imaginative drawing" to kids.. so this is all very confusing to me. I point to a library of books for reference, and see what inspires them and catches thier interest. I teach them the very basics of drawing.
